Since all the films are scripted, the actors use all the tricks in the book to sell us their love stories on the screen. What’s the best way to create as real a scene as possible? Of course, improvise! It can be nerve-wracking to surprise your co-star with an unexpected kiss, but in almost all situations, the reward outweighs the risk.
1. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in Jurassic World
There’s a scene where the character of Howard seeks inner strength and saves the personality of Pratt. Then, he gives her a stunning and cinematic kiss as a sign of appreciation and gratitude. In reality, Chris Pratt was all thinking on his feet: “[The kiss] came out of nowhere. There wasn’t anything written in there… In the way that it was written, we had shot the scene. There was no kiss. And then, it happened on the last day—what you see in the movie… All applauded. It was amazing!’
2. Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams in American Hustle
Despite the fact that there was nothing remotely comparable in the script, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence agreed to violently kiss in the middle of their characters’ fight: “We were talking about the scene and I was like, ‘How about if she kisses her?’” And [the director] realized that… Jennifer was a game entirely. It ended up being like a poisonous conversation, the ideal exclamation point.
3. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher in Star Wars: The Last Jedi
After years of being apart, the most touching moment of the whole movie was seeing Luke and Leia reunite. In that scene, Mark Hamill disappeared and gave an unplanned yet tender kiss on the forehead to the late Carrie Fisher, which became an ultimate farewell between the characters and actors: I didn’t make the decision and say, ‘Can I do this?’ I mean, in the recording, I don’t know whether or not we rehearsed it, but it just happened. They weren’t prepared for me to stand up. And we did it again for a second take, and it was absolutely spontaneous.”
4. Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2
In the final part of The Hunger Games series, we certainly didn’t see this kiss coming, but we would be lying if we said that we didn’t want it. As Banks revealed, “Woody and I went into that moment that wasn’t written, that was improved.” We agreed to go ahead and do it, and the director said, “I love it.” Let’s give it another shot.’ Harrelson also admitted, “I have a crush on Elizabeth Banks, I’m not going to lie,” that he actually enjoyed that moment even more than we did.
5. Helena Bonham Carter and Julian Sands in A Room with a View
This film is considered to be one of the most romantic films of all time, and its iconic kiss in the field could stir the heart of everybody. “In fact, Helena Bonham Carter revealed that for her it was a wild ride: “Do you know the kiss that ended up being something everyone loved? That was completely improvised, at the last minute right away. The actress was just 18 years old at the time and claims that when Sands kissed her because she was inexperienced, she was trying her best not to laugh. We’re glad Helena didn’t lose herself in the moment!
6. Indira Varma and Gemma Whelan in Game of Thrones
It’s shocking to find out that there was an unscripted romantic moment between the characters during a show like Game of Thrones. When the characters of Varma and Whelan finally met in season 7, however, it seemed easy for the actresses to complete the scene with a flirtatious kiss. As Varma revealed, “It was not intended for us to kiss.” It just seemed like the best thing to do.”
7. Max Greenfield and Jake Johnson in New Girl
Greenfield had his own vision for the show’s relationship between his and Johnson’s characters and attempted to kiss him several times, after which it became a New Girl running joke. “As Jake said, “Improvised Max kissed me on the show with a lot. Greenfield acknowledged that he had to convince Jake: “At first, Jake was against it, and I told him, ‘Just go for it, let it happen, let it be open, let it be in the mom.’
8. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth in The Last Song
Miley and Liam’s previous relationship resurfaced on the set of The Last Single, and it all began with an accidental kiss. It was Murray who went with his gut and built something really special: “It was always supposed to be this tender farewell where both of them felt they had somehow touched each other.” And I remember he would always spring stuff on here sometimes, and it was fun to get her reaction back.
10. Steve Carell and Oscar Nunez in The Office
The actor felt it was his chance to shine in an episode where Steve Carell’s character figured out that one of his subordinates was homosexual. Michael Scott celebrates Oscar at one point and demonstrates it in a rather invasive, but hilarious way. Nunez said that he saw no kiss coming: “We were just meant to embrace, not kiss, and he kept embracing me. And he came in really close on that particular take, and I was like, ‘Where is he going with this?’ Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes He deserves a lot of praise for not giggling during that scene.
