Over the last year, bitcoin has experienced its usual volatile swings reaching a new all-time high of over 50,000 USD. This jump in price has been attributed to greater adoption by large enterprises and the mainstream population as a whole and has led many to wonder how they can begin using their new assets. A common question to new bitcoin enthusiasts is, “what can I use bitcoin to buy?” Fortunately, the answer is more things than ever before. The only caveat is that some of these purchases can’t be made directly through the buyer and will require a few workarounds.
Rather than purchasing from a seller directly, users may elect to use a third-party payment service or connect directly with a third-party for one-off purchases. To ensure security, a cryptocurrency escrow payment can be issued. With that in mind, here are a few things that you can use bitcoin to purchase in 2021.
Holidays
Travala, a platform for hotel and accommodation bookings, allows users to access over 2 million destinations around the world. Vacations can be booked using bitcoin and a variety of other cryptocurrencies. To do so, users can select the digital currency they would like to pay with, and the screen will populate with the price in crypto and the equivalent in fiat currency. Next, users can select “Complete Reservation,” and an address will be shown to which users can send their funds.
CheapAir.com, a platform for cheap last-minute airfares, also accepts payment in bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Ethereum, Litecoin, and Dash.
Travelers may also be excited to know that many popular travel destinations are now seen as crypto-friendly, including Prague, San Francisco, Madrid, Buenos Aires, and New York. These cities all have many businesses that will accept bitcoin, although carrying around some fiat money is advisable.
Anything Amazon Sells
Among these options are products from Amazon. Although transactions can’t be made directly, consumers can use a third-party service named Purse. The platform matches Amazon shoppers with those who want to exchange their Amazon gift cards for Bitcoin. Their flagship product is known as ‘Name Your Discount’ and allows users to name the discount they would like to receive on their order (anywhere from 5-33%).
Home Decor
Overstock.com is a well-known internet retailer in Utah, United States. Being founded in 1999, the company later began accepting direct bitcoin payments in 2014 in relation to its other blockchain initiatives. The platform now sells mattresses, bedding, furniture, rugs, and a variety of other home decor items.
To conduct bitcoin transactions, Overstock has partnered with Coinbase, a cryptocurrency wallet that allows users to buy, sell, send and receive bitcoin. Users can then choose to “Pay with Bitcoin” when checking out with their order. After the information is verified, users can select “Submit Order Now” to complete their transaction using their Coinbase account or a bitcoin address. It is important to note that bitcoin payments can only be made through the website on desktop, not mobile.
Coronavirus Tests
In early 2021, the news was released that Alexander Goldberg, a New York doctor, would accept payment in the form of bitcoin. While he would typically charge $400 – $500 for at-home coronavirus testing, he later stated that this payment would be acceptable in the bitcoin equivalent.
Property
Back in 2017, the first house was sold for bitcoin in Essex, United Kingdom. Since then, more real estate groups and consulting firms have made buying real estate with bitcoin an easier task than ever before. Among them is Bithome, a Swiss consulting firm with properties across Asia, America, and Europe. In Canada, Greater Property Group facilitates transactions between buyers and sellers willing to transact with bitcoin. On the other side of the world, OpenHouzz in Spain offers a selection of properties in the country that can be purchased with bitcoin.
Pizza
In Venezuela, Pizza Hut has partnered with the platform Cryptobuyer to accept bitcoin, Ethereum, and other popular altcoins for their pizza. This might sound familiar. After all, the first on-record bitcoin transaction was for the same thing.
Luxury vehicles
If you saw massive bitcoin profits, it might be time to purchase the supercar of your dreams. There are now a few options for bitcoin-friendly car dealerships, including BitCars and AutoCoinCars. These dealerships contain luxury brands, including Bugatti, McLaren, and Porsche.
As bitcoin continues to gain popularity, this list is only among the beginning of where digital currencies can be spent. With Paypal and Shopify also supporting bitcoin transactions, it is believed that more businesses will soon follow.
